Student number: 516830

Course/Module: Drawing 1

Assignment number 5

Tutorial type: Ghangout

Overall Comments

You have worked hard in this course, and you have made good developments within your drawing practice and insights into art practice. These insights are key and you need to listen to them and follow them through, this will help you to build your confidence as you go forwards. Your interest in portraiture has grown and this has been useful for you, so now develop your knowledge in this area through encountering more works both contemporary and historical, so that you can inform your ways ahead. Keep drawing and experimenting with drawing techniques, so that the line/drawings become fluent.

Thank you. I will do it

Feedback on assignment

Demonstration of technical and Visual Skills, Quality of Outcome, Demonstration of Creativity

We spoke about the overall submission. The selected works sent are ready for submission and are cleanly mounted and clearly labelled. I am happy to look at your final selection via your blog.

  • Signpost clearly for the assessors.

  • Show your experimentation clearly

  • Make sure that the research is fully written up and don’t forget your study

trip/s

Thank you, I will do

We discussed the Assignment 5 Self- Portrait and how you took many photographs in order to decide on the poses and background. You have thought your way through the concept of multiple views and also the idea of artificial light. The link back to Titian is useful and you have clearly thought about positionality in relation to this work and also to your own drawing. Look at this work again to consider the light especially on the left- hand side of the image- and how this might relate to your left hand side of the drawing (that we spoke about). Is there something that you can take from the Titian to help you to resolve your drawing?

The method that you have used (as in photographic and computer led) is one way for you to experience a multiple portrait such as this, and it is good that you are aware of your methods and what they can bring to the work, but also don’t forget to work from direct observation too. It would be good for you to try this multiple portrait utilising a mirror and working direct- to see what the differences in method are? Some quick sketches would be useful, I think it will really help you to resolve the issues within the work that we have discussed, such as the figure on the left, scale and so on.(see para below)

As I said in my assignment report, I started this piece of work sketching from life and combining sketches using mirrors in part four. Given that, creating a triple-view self-portrait was an ambitious piece of work for me and I wanted to explore and incorporate into the process the use of photographic sketches, a method that has been used by artists since the late nineteen century to study and create compositions. And I also wanted to experiment with more up to date technology using apps that have become available more recently.

I accept that my work shows some issues, which I will try to resolve based on your advice, and will however also keep experimenting with the technology in the process.

We discussed the possibility of working through some of the issues in the drawing, such as scale and modelling of the face (on the left) and a decided handling of the shirts- so that there is intention across them (the left hand shirt is less worked than the others- so there is some disparity there.

I agree that the face on the left is slightly smaller in comparison to the other two, and my initial intention was to make the one on the right also a bit smaller so it would look as if the ones on both side were a little behind the central one. I will work on it and try to improve it.

I also agree that the left hand shirt needs more work - my intention was not to show too much detail on the shirts and give them a sort of unfinished look, so as not to distract the focus from the faces. I will however work a bit more on the shirt.

At present, there is a tendency to plan away from the sketchbook (or sheets of paper, it doesn’t matter which). And if you made quick sketches and became familiar with the subject, this would help you to work through issues such as scale and composition before you began the final piece. It is this part of the process that you could spend more time with and this will feed into the outcomes and confidence.

  • Experiment more freely with your mediums

  • Practice the eyes, nose, mouth

  • Try to make quick sketches as well as longer drawings- vary the time that

you allocate to drawing, 1 minute, 5 minutes, 10 minutes, 15 minutes etc as

this will help you to gain fluidity and confidence.

  • Through exploration of the subject the work will come, so try not to make ‘a

picture’ but rather explore the subject more.

I will definitely do more sketching and experimentation. Thank you

Sketchbooks

Demonstration of technical and Visual Skills, Demonstration of Creativity

We spoke about your sketchbook as a newish way of working for you, and it is important that you use it to develop your skills, don’t worry about it being clean and tidy, but rather feel that is a place where you can try things out, plan, test and create.

You could aim to investigate an aspect of portraiture ( such as skin, eyes, mouth) across various artists such as Jenny Saville, Daphne Todd using your sketchbook to make a physical research investigation for instance.

For assessment, collate your sketchbooks/preparatory work together, as discussed.

Portraiture has been my main interest and parts four and five have reinforced my interest, and following my discovery of self-portraiture I am now very much looking forward to developing this area.

Research

Context, reflective thinking, critical thinking, analysis

Continue to build on this aspect of the course. In your reflective writing, think about how you can be specific about how the research is useful (or limiting) and explain why this might be.

Consider the context of your drawings and draw together artists to make comparative comments about.

Thank you, I will try to be more methodical in my research, which I enjoy very much, and which I believe has improved since the beginning of the course.

Learning Logs or Blogs/Critical essays

Context, reflective thinking, critical thinking, analysis

As above- your blog is well constructed and clear, with good images. It would be good for you to go back and enrich what you have already achieved.

Suggested reading/viewing

Context

This is a useful text for going forwards. Palgrave Study Skills. Critical thinking skills. Stella Cottrell. Macmillan Education. Palgrave.

Portrait and self- portrait Jenny Saville, Daphne Todd, David Cobley. Chuck Close. Jonathan Yeo. Look at the very different ways that they work with this subject area, and actually what this subject can be in 21st c contemporary art.

Also look at the work of Photographer Cindy Sherman.

Pointers for the next assignment

  • Reflect on this feedback in your learning log.

  • Make a final decision on your selection- be careful with your edit, so that you select

the strongest work, not all the work.

Strengths

Developing interest in self/portraiture

A good clear blog showing development

Areas for development

Drawing the portrait in different ways/fast/slow/mediums/scale etc

Preparatory work

Contextual Research

Well done on this course, it has been a pleasure working with you.

Thank you very much for all your help.
