About Me

I am Cecilia Barandiaran-Sprot and I enrolled in the Fine Art BA (Hons) course in July 2017.    I was born in Peru and came to the UK in 1999.

I became interested in art as a child when the portrait of Giuseppe Verdi by Giovanni Boldini inspired me, and the expressions and colours of that painting have stayed with me to this day.    My talented older brother was my other inspiration, and under his guidance we spent time at home painting and drawing together.

From my mid teens however art was put to the back of my mind as I concentrated on gaining an Engineering Degree in Peru and then a Masters Degree in Information Systems in the UK, where I worked in IT and Finance.

Art came back into my life in 2011 when my husband and I began taking a succession of evening and daytime art courses at local Adult Learning Centres, since which time I have participated in a number of group exhibitions and have become a member of Surrey Contemporaries and of Fleet Art Society.

My favourite subject matter is portraiture, primarily in pastel, and this tends towards photo-realism using my IT and photography knowledge to create dramatic compositions, though I also like to experiment with different techniques, mediums and subjects.

Now in my mid-fifties, I wish to raise my artistic ability beyond reproduction of what I see, to incorporate my emotions into my subject matter and find my voice as a contemporary artist.   I hope that with a degree from the Open College of the Arts I can improve my work
