Research: John Virtue - the urban environment

John Virtue’s Landscapes of London at the National Gallery are almost abstract but also figurative, with a lot of expression and drama, and I can see some resemblance to Turner’s landscape style in black and white. He works only in black and white acrylic on Canvas.

In contrast to Turner however, I find them very unsettling; almost disturbing, and clearly rather than aiming for realistic representations of his subjects he is representing his perceptions and feelings towards the place portrayed.
