Research for Assignment Three

Ian Murphy, Great Britain, 1963

For the assignment I looked at the work of several artists who depict derelict structures and the work of Ian Murphy caught my eye, especially the technique used in his The Scar of life: Macau III. He produces very textured pieces of work in charcoal and oil which look very tactile, using newspaper collage as a support which seems to increase the texture and gives a moody feel to old places, suggestive of hidden, forgotten stories - very much to my taste

Lomorna Waddell

Waddell is another artist whose work I admire very much, though I haven’t been able to find much information about her apart from the pictures of her work on the pinterest website. She creates wonderful mixed media drawings using sepia, black ink, charcoal and graphite, her drawing The Locarno Building, Swindon, being typical. Hers is a very expressive, loose style, and her use of colour, especially sepia, is a very simple but effective way of capturing the atmosphere of a derelict building.

Her use of perspective, upwards and outwards from below, gives a sense of the scale of the the structure, increasing the drama of her composition.
