Gallery visits

This week I visited the Ashmolean at Oxford to see the Rafael Drawings Exhibition, which was truly mind-blowing - 120 Rafael drawings showing his exploration and experimentation, primarily studies for his compositions.

The exhibition showed his exploration of materials and techniques in a search for expression of energy, and experimentation with complex figures, individuals and groups.

He used pen and ink, charcoal, graphite, blind stylus, and metalpoint to indent the paper as a guide before using pen and ink or other mediums, such as ground bone or finely ground eggshell mixed with animal glue.

On show were studies for “the massacre of the innocents” “the heads and hands of two Apostles” and “the Virgin with the pomegranate” as below
