Experimenting with expressive lines and marks - Anger

Finally, I had the courage, very reluctantly though, to get myself into the anger emotion

In the top left corner I used blue oil pastel. My marks were thin and strong and my hand moved very quickly and energetically when I did them, in contrast to the other experiments where I drew slowly, as I am normally a calm and slow movement person.

In the top right corner I used black conté. This time the marks were straight, and I felt I was putting a lot of pressure on the paper.

In the bottom left I used black Indian ink applied with a wooden stick. I felt I was drawing the marks very quickly and putting a lot of pressure on the paper, which made the ink splash on the paper.

In the bottom right I used sepia conté to see if using the same medium in a different colour would make any difference, as I did in my Calm experiment. This time however I don’t think it did.

In terms of portraying expression and emotions in the marks I was making, I felt that my anger was transmitted from my brain through my hand mainly in the form of the pressure and speed of the marks. Even though I was putting a lot of pressure into making the marks however, I felt this was not enough to fully release the angry energy inside me onto the paper. Luckily I was able to switch off the emotion at the end of the experiment.
