For this exercise I used a photo I took from the TV last year of the supermoon, and water mixable oil (WMO) on A3 acrylic paper with an acrylic wash.

I firstly painted a grey acrylic wash and painted the tree in Lamp Black WMO. I then used a mixture of Titanium White and Lamp Black WMO to paint the moon – trying to achieve a smooth transition of the lights and darks on the moon.

Final result

For the second exercise I painted the paper with a wash of Ivory Black acrylic and then painted the negative space of the tree and the moon with a mixture of Lamp Black and Titanium White WMO.

Final result

Whilst the two paintings are fairly similar I found the second one the more challenging, especially in the depiction of the branches in front of the moon, as the negative spaces were bigger and I had to leave narrower areas unpainted. I do however I like the second one more as it seems more atmospheric.
